Ultherapy: A Tried & True Weapon In the Wrinkle Wars
Wrinkles are one of those inevitable facts of life. But that hasn’t stopped the many millions of people around the world from waging war against them.
And according to Statista, this never-ending war is generating $62 million every year — the estimated value of the global anti-aging market. With so much money poured into this industry, we now have a huge anti-aging arsenal. Think anti-wrinkle creams, Botox, fillers, chemical peels, laser resurfacing, microneedling and surgery, to name a few.
However, there’s one tried and true weapon that stands out in this crowd: Ultherapy.
Ultherapy 101
Ever wished there was a way to lift and tighten skin without going under the knife? Well, Ultherapy promises to do just that. Plus, it can do that in less than an hour and with no downtime.
So, what is Ultherapy?
Ultherapy, or ultrasound therapy, is a non-invasive alternative to a facelift. It uses a unique type of ultrasound technology to stimulate collagen production deep within the tissues of the face, neck and chest to provide next-level lifting and tightening. It was introduced in 2008 and received its first FDA approval a year later. It has since been the go-to treatment for non-surgical skin lifting/tightening.
An important fact about Ultherapy is that it remains the only non-invasive treatment cleared by the FDA to lift the neck, chin and brow area as well as diminish fine lines and wrinkles on the chest. This means you can trust this treatment to actually deliver what it promised and to do so safely. While many other treatments promise the same, not many come close to Ultherapy as far as efficiency, safety and convenience go in the war against aging.
How Ultherapy Wins the Wrinkle Wars
Wrinkles are a tell-tale sign of aging. Many people don’t like having this reminder of their years lived so obviously written on their faces, so they turn to treatments that prevent, delay or reverse them.
Now, there are countless ways to do that. Some choose a good skincare routine to keep their skin looking youthful, while others choose professional treatments like Botox, dermal fillers, chemical peels, laser skin resurfacing and surgery.
While all these options have their benefits, Ultherapy stands out as a uniquely effective treatment in the war against wrinkles for several reasons:
Lifts and tightens non-invasively
There aren’t that many options that can replicate the effects of a traditional facelift like Ultherapy. Injectables diminish wrinkles by smoothing out the skin, while chemical peels and lasers improve skin texture. But none provide much lifting and minimal tightening.
Provides long-lasting results
Ultherapy is no replacement for a facelift as far as longevity goes. But it does provide visible improvement for up to two years, and touch-up treatments can help you enjoy your results even longer. All this helps delay the need for surgery for many years.
Targets the neck and chest
You probably don’t know that many treatments that were designed to rejuvenate the neck and chest — which are prone to aging just as much as the face. Well, that’s because there are not that many options, making Ultherapy a go-to treatment for aging below the chin.
Goes deeper
Most non-surgical anti-aging treatments work relatively superficially. But aging affects more than just the skin; it is also due to changes in the deeper plane of the face where tissues that support the skin, fat and muscles are. Ultrasound energy from Ultherapy can reach these areas for more prominent lifting and tightening.
Super convenient
Not everyone has the time or means to undergo invasive surgery or treatments with lengthy downtimes. Ultherapy offers long-lasting wrinkle reduction and skin tightening with no need to take time off work and other obligations. Just come to your one-hour appointment and you’re good to go.
Ultherapy vs. Botox
When the topic of wrinkle reduction comes up, Botox is usually what first comes to mind. Botox was approved decades ago to temporarily diminish dynamic wrinkles in the upper third of the face, notably forehead wrinkles, frown lines and crow’s feet.
However, Botox cannot work on wrinkles caused by skin laxity in areas such as the neck and chest — which is where Ultherapy comes in handy. It also isn’t able to lift the skin in the lower areas of the face like Ultherapy.
So, while both treatments can work to diminish wrinkles, they work differently and in different areas.
So, What’s the Secret Behind Ultherapy?
The secret behind Ultherapy’s magic lies in its unique technology.
Ultherapy uses something called micro-focused ultrasound (MFU) to tighten skin and other tissues. The MFU is delivered to a depth of up to 5 mm within selected layers of the dermis and subdermis — much deeper than other energy-based treatments. The dermis is the deep layer of the skin where most collagen production happens, while the subdermis is where the fascia (a layer of connective tissue) is located.
Once the MFU reaches its targeted destination, it heats the tissues to 60°C and produces tiny points of tissue coagulation. This causes collagen fibers in the facial planes to break down, reorganize and rise in numbers. The fascial planes include the such as the superficial muscular aponeurotic system (SMAS) and platysma and deep reticular dermis — all of which are tightened during your typical facelift surgery. This means that Ultherapy addresses problem areas that were otherwise only possible to reach with incisions and stitches.
Another reason Ultherapy works so well is the use of high-resolution ultrasound imaging. This allows providers to see, in real-time, where exactly the Ultrasound energy is delivered, making treatment precise and reducing the possibility of injuries.
