What Is CONTOUR TRL™?

CONTOUR TRL™ is an Erbium YAG laser developed by Sciton, a leader in energy-based medical devices. The acronym “TRL” stands for Tunable Resurfacing Laser, which is its defining feature.

All lasers used in dermatology and medical aesthetics work by destroying the skin’s outer layer while heating its deeper layers. This causes the topmost layer to peel off and the deeper layers to produce more collagen. In other words, it renews your skin from within.

However, not all lasers are as customizable and tunable as CONTOUR TRL™. A major advantage of CONTOUR TRL™ over other devices of this kind is its tunable control. This feature allows us to fine-tune your treatment for your unique skin needs and expectations while minimizing side effects and unexpected results.

How CONTOUR TRL™ Works

All lasers work by focusing a specific wavelength of high-energy light on problem areas of the skin. The light targets water in the dermis and epidermis, which causes damage to targeted skin cells and stimulates their renewal along with increased collagen production.

CONTOUR TRL™ uses infrared light for this, which can penetrate the skin at a greater depth when needed. This device, however, comes with tunable technology that allows us to adjust the depth of ablation and coagulation with great precision.

The Procedure

Before your procedure, you may need to follow a skin-care protocol to prepare your skin for this treatment. This needs to be individualized according to treatment plans and goals.

A typical session is about one to four hours. Treatment duration depends largely on the size of the treatment area and what is being treated.

The Recovery

Laser skin resurfacing requires some downtime. The type of teatment performed will determine the amount of dowtime you can expect to have. At Wink, we practice what we preach. We have received all the treatments we perform and will be able to walk you through the process!

In the first day or two, you can expect some redness and swelling, similar to a mild sunburn. Your skin will feel tight, and mild discomfort is to be expected. We usually suggest taking mild pain relievers and applying a daily moisturizer to help you feel better. Within the next few weeks, your skin will begin to flake and peel. It’s important to NOT pick your skin at this point as this can lead to scarring and infections.

The Results

Once the skin has fully healed — which can take up to four weeks — your skin will appear more even, firm, and overall youthful. This treatment is very effective in delivering dramatic results, so you can expect to feel much better about your appearance at the end of your healing process.

How safe is CONTOUR TRL™?

Compared to other ablative lasers, CONTOUR TRL™ is less likely to lead to adverse outcomes. Because it can be fine-tuned to offer precise and targeted treatment, mistakes are kept to a minimum. Erbium YAG lasers also have higher absorbency than other lasers, which leads to less thermal damage.

How is CONTOUR TRL™ different from CO2 lasers?

Compared to CO2 lasers, CONTOUR TRL™ are safer with fewer side effects and shorter downtime. CO2 lasers, however, offer more dramatic results for people with deeper skin flaws.

How many treatments will I need?

Although many of our clients see dramatic improvement after a single treatment, the optimal number for you is completely dependent on your individual skin concerns and what we are correcting.

How long is the downtime?

With superficial treatment, the required downtime will be about a week. For medium to deep peels, up to two weeks of downtime are needed. While you can resume your usual activities before that, you will probably want to avoid face-to-face interactions until your skin has fully healed.

How do I maintain my results?

You can expect results from this treatment to last three to five years, depending on your skin quality and age. Each individual’s natural aging process will dictate how long that translates into visible results on the outside. To maintain your results, you need to take good care of your skin with regular exfoliation, moisturizers, sun protection and good lifestyle habits.

Am I a good candidate for CONTOUR TRL™?

If you have mild to moderate sun damage, wrinkles or scars, you are probably a good candidate for this treatment. However, if you have pronounced skin laxity, an inflammatory skin condition or are pregnant or breastfeeding, we may suggest a different treatment option.
